1Fantasy these always seem to be the most successful but Sci Fi could work if you did it right
2Turn Based i have been playing RPGs for a while so i personally prefer a laid back turn based system.
3Yes story is the most important part of an RPG
4An opening cutscene would be all i would need because cutscenes in game i tend to skip frequently
5I am an RPG fanatic so i love a complex leveling system but most of the newgrounds crowd would probably like a balanced one
6Sonny because of how dynamic the leveling and equipment systems were
7I think graphics should be the last thing you think about and you should more think about what you are going to do different rather than just drawing monsters
8I dont like how dramatic storys in RPGs get sometimes i would rather have a laid back carefree story where its just some guys going out having fun while trying to complete their main goal
9The most important aspect of an RPG is the diversity of techniques, look at Chrono Trigger for example that game had at least a hundred different techs and that is one thing that kept people playing is because they were constantly unlocking new moves and playing with other characters to see what double and triple techs they could use.
10I think the main thing missing from flash RPGs is no overworld, look at Epic Battle Fantasy and Sonny you just move from one battle to the next in those games i would have loved to explore some environments and solve some puzzles to get to each boss while fighting some small enemies.

I hope this survey helps and lets get me a poster!

1. Somewhere between Fantasy and Classic

2. Real time

3. Yes

4. Yes

5. A balance of both

6. Sonny

7. It adds to the experience but game play is what pulls me in.

8. I dislike only when the lveling system is either too easy (Fable) or too hard. I dislike grinding for experience.

9. Story, deffinetly. It's even better when the game allows us to choose our own story, but not many have succeeded at that.

10. More variety in character customisation.

1. What kind of styling do you like to see in an RPG game?
I like all the styles you mentioned, but right now I'd go for a good steam-punk or sci-fi.

2. What kind of combat system do you like to use?
Real Time. I love fallout1 and fallout 2's turn-based styles and would definitely play a game with that kind of combat style if the other elements of the game like the story/plot and atmosphere were good enough, but realtime combat like Diablo is more exciting and makes me feel more part of the world. It has to be done well though, otherwise turn-based might be better.

3. Is the story important to you when playing an RPG?
Yes, very much so.

4. Do well-presented Cutscenes improve the experience for you?
Yes. I would define well-presented cutscenes as clips that suit the art style of in-game mode. If a cut-scene is done really well, but doesn't compliment or feed off of the in-game art and just doesnt fit, I get turned off easily.

5. Do you prefer a levelling system to be simple and easy to use or deep and complex?
Hmmm, this is a hard question. I guess it depends on the game. For a flash game I would recommend a simple and easy leveling system, but deep enough to make it interesting. Not too deep though, because people might lose their nerves with it.

6. What's your favourite Flash RPG series? Choose from the list or add your own.
I dont have a favourite flash rpg SERIES that I really like, but I guess Sonny. Morbus is a really cool rpg game.

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?
I would say gameplay is the most important part of a game, then story, then graphics. But they are all pretty damn close to each other and I think they are all extremely important to make a successful game.

8. Is there anything you dislike about RPG games in general? Please list.
I think unnecessarily long conversations are an immediate turn-off. I also mostly dont like it when enemies are levelled to your character's level. I like it when there are areas that will most definitely be too hard for your character and you need to level up to be able to handle later.

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
3 things. The leveling system, gameplay and shops. Make the player always yurn to get to the next level. The way the game plays like controls should feel comfortable. And then lastly, make the player always want to sell and buy stuff. Better and more expensive items, as well as the need to heal or upgrade your equipment is a great way to keep somebody shopping. And to keep somebody shopping is to keep them playing. Fighting enemies in an rpg is fun, but they are mostly just a means to level up and to shop!

10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?
Interesting characters and story. An awesome real-time combat engine. Companions to fight alongside you.

- SeethingSwarm

My ideas is:
1. Classic middle earth and 21th century zombie attack...
2.Real Time
3.A bit.
4.Yes but oly if the Graphics are crapy
5.Simple but good.
6.Sonny.
7.I love bad Graphics, dont know why.
8.yes, when you have too much options.
9.doin stuff you can´t do in real life.
10.well attacks that is realy random.

1. What kind of styling do you like to see in an RPG game?
Fantasy

Fantasy is best to me, simply because of the others have a thin line on what I tend to favor in an RPG.

2. What kind of combat system do you like to use?
Real Time

I like to think on my feet.

3. Is the story important to you when playing an RPG?
Yes

RPG is of dire importance to me in an RPG. Without one, the game feels dull.

4. Do well-presented Cutscenes improve the experience for you?
Yes

A well-presented cutscene can make the player feel more in tune with the character. Something with a well balanced emotion. [Example, if the characters family member was killed, taken captive, etc. And the character had an extreme emotion because of the situation can make the player feel a little emotion them selfs.]

5. Do you prefer a levelling system to be simple and easy to use or deep and complex?
A balance of both.

The only reason I like there to be a balance of both is because I like there to be a race and/or class system. I like choosing whether or not my character can chop though endless hordes of enemies with an axe, or bring down some pain with a few devastating spells. I also tend to like classes that are later unlocked by playing other classes for a period of time, such as Final Fantasy Tactics.

6. What's your favourite Flash RPG series? Choose from the list or add your own.
Sonny, is what I would chose from your list.

But a good example of what I would chose for what I like to play is Dragon Age Journeys. [ www . dragonagejourneys . com ] The grid combat is not important, in fact, I'd prefer it without, but it's leveling system is amazing.

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?
It adds to the experience but game play is what pulls me in.

Graphics are not necessary to me, but it is something to admire when a mage of some sort uses a awesome spell.

8. Is there anything you dislike about RPG games in general? Please list.
Cheesy storylines!

I hate seeing, "I've been a bounty-hunter since before I can remember." Or, big bad man with a big bad sword that gives him big bad powers, and you need to destroy the blade!

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
Leveling system, leveling system, leveling system.

I hate playing an RPG and suddenly a spike of crazy difficult creatures that seem ten levels more powerful then the last. I'd love to play a game in which the monsters that scale depending on your level. [Such as they did in Final Fantasy VII]

10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?

See answer five

Turn based

Another Small Favour

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?
Definitely, I love the pretty!

8. Is there anything you dislike about RPG games in general? Please list.
Doing the same repetitive thing over and over, not enough variety in enemies.

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
Lots of fun things to do, interesting enemies and characters.

10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?
An open world... Really varied different environments, like a jungle or an ice mountain etc.

Thanks!

1. What kind of styling do you like to see in an RPG game?
Fantasy

2. What kind of combat system do you like to use?
Real Time

3. Is the story important to you when playing an RPG?
Yes - Without a story, i get the feeling the game is pointless rather fast

4. Do well-presented Cutscenes improve the experience for you?
Yes - Definitely, as long as they are short. I hate having to watch endless cutscenes. Short and action-packed is the way to go.

5. Do you prefer a levelling system to be simple and easy to use or deep and complex?
A balance of both - Perhaps simple for the lower levels and going more complex as you become stronger?

6. What's your favourite Flash RPG series? Choose from the list or add your own.
Sonny - But i don't like the turn-based fighting

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?
Definitely, I love the pretty! - Good graphics are always appealing and the first impression is very decisive if someone decides do play or not

8. Is there anything you dislike about RPG games in general? Please list.
- mindless and constant grinding
- unbalanced 'classes' systems
- quests without a story (as in: Super Duper Quest: Kill 2 spiders)

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
A balance between character development and storyline development

10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?
Playing in a 3D-world. Not 3D graphics, but a 3D world.
In most Flash RPG's, you either have one huge 2D map or you have a series of 2D maps which you move on and between. If there are floors, those are just other maps too.
What i want is the ability to have a 3D interaction.

1.fantasy

Sonny

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?

It adds to the experience but game play is what pulls me in.

8. Is there anything you dislike about RPG games in general? Please list.
Item management systems that are too clunky and complex to use.
Large dungeons that only provide a place for random battles to occur.

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
The gameplay and the story. If an RPG doesn't have a compelling story, I'm less likely to enjoy it.

10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?

I would like to see a multiplayer system of some sort.

1: Fantasy
2: Real Time because it always adds that sense of urgency to battles.
3: Yes. Final Fantasy 7 wouldnt have been half as awesome as it was without the story.
4: Yes. Again with Final Fantasy 7, the initial cutscene where we see Aeris picking a flower and then zoomed on over to cloud getting off the train did so many things. It showed that the world (at least where you start off at) is gritty, without beauty. Secondly, with cloud's part, it told us he was the hero and that hes a bit of a badass. People love playing as the badass. Its why the most used characters are the power types that are either pissed off all the time or are mysterious, they are badasses.
5: I like a mix of both. Final Fantasy 10 did this perfectly. It was like you would still level up, but if you dont fight at all (a problem all RPG's suffer from) then there was a good chance you didnt have the right sphere to level up that attribute.
6: Lol I cant answer that. Its because they all have perfected one aspect of RPGS at the expense of leaving the others behind (it works though x3). Epic battle fantasy gives us all the end powers and sends us into war, but since we didnt earn that shit we dont know how to use it properly. It also says fuck you to the story so when the end comes we really dont care to see what we have accomplished, Sonny gave us a great story, at the cost of the battle system. It sucked. With the exception of end boss fights (final fantasy 7) and Epic Battle Fantasy I do not like battle marathons. And then it did away with the RBS (random battle system) and made you choose when to fight your marathon, which is not cool man. With the small favor series, we got the perfect character and item interaction, but alas thats all the game is. There is the occasional fight scene at the end but really. Mix the best parts of all 3 together and youd get an awesome RPG.
7: Level of graphics depends on level of seriousness of the story. I'll play an 8-bit game like mario if its just goofing around time, but the more serious the story, the better the graphics (unless your a game like final fantasy 7 and thus timeless). And what I mean by this is that the more serious a story is, the more likely I will get wrapped up in it and thus I dont want silly imperfections x3. Enter Doom 3. Dont get me wrong, it was badass and had the graphics to back it up, you know until you or the enemy moved and you saw that all that high detail shit fades into this unicolor blur. Only the walrus monster and anything larger then that was able to keep the details when I was moving. Now this is the opposite end of the spectrum, where too good graphics fucks your day over, but the point remains valid.
8: One thing I dislike is that apparently civilization decided to sporadically appear. Like these small as fuck could be eaten by a tiger villages are in the middle of bumfuck no where with litterally no one travelling to them (and we all know what that means). I WANT MORE REALISTIC CIVILIZATION. Another thing I dislike is how most RPGS have you get the uber item. Like the Final Summon in FFVII, that was gay. Finally, after going into debt 20 times from buying greens and nuts and after releasing millions of inbred chocobo bastards, yes I finally get the golden chocobo and now I travel and get the final summon! Was it worth it? Hell no. Final Fantasy 10 however did it right. It made you fight an uberly hard boss to get an uber power: the limit break (the one that lets you go over 9999). And the last thing I hate in RPGS is fighting the same boss over and over and over and over. Reno and turk, Jenova, Seymor. Jesus fucking christ I dont want to fucking fight a more powerful you because in order to make you more powerful, you have some gay ass power that will kill me or me and another dude leaving one alive in one hit.
9: The most important aspect to me is character evolution. I mean look at cloud (Im sorry for sampling from final fantasy so much but you want to make a game like it so I just got into a mindset to take from it to give to you). He has amnesia, tries to fight through, fails at key points (when spehiroth is near by wink wink) and betrays his friends against his will to be an NPC a bit. When character evolution is done right, losing a main character is like losing apart of yourself even though you get to keep all his materia and shit. So yeah, thats the most important part.

10: You wanna know whats missing? The side quests. I mean in all the flash rpgs, there isnt a place you wont go or a person you wont see. There needs to be continents that you wont even think about going to until the main story gets boring or too hard, there needs to be quests other then the main story one that unlocks new powers or places or summons. There needs to be parts of the game that I will probably miss unless I search for it. It basically needs to be the world. Flash RPGS send you on a prechoosen path, RPGs like Final fantasy 7 tell you your next destination and lets you do whatever the fuck you want inbetween A and B. Not flash RPGs, if you dont follow the story, your wasting time.

Hope this helps and I cant wait to see this game.

1.fantasy
2.turn based
3.yes
4.mostly
5.sometimes either or. It depends on how it's done. If it's done like FFX and using a complex grid than complex is ok. I guess complex works if i have a visual to reference to.
6. I enjoyed the Epic Battle Fantasys
7.Mostly yes
8. sometimes dialogue drags on. Enchanted Arms is an example. I don't need ten boxs of dialogue telling me to push a to climb a ladder.
9. How easily you can get connected to the world and the charecters in it.
10.normally this miss a long story arc. due to there size.

Glad i could help!

1 all good choices but i would go with fantasy
2 realtime it takes the most skill
3 the story is the most important piece in any rpg
4 good cutscenes are good but not always needed
5 i like a nice balence level system where you have choices on what to level up but still simple on how you do it
6 i liked sonny and epic battle fantasy
7 graphics always make a game better but ill still play one with bad graphics
8 i dont like turnbase to much other then that rpgs are really fun
9 the most importan aspect of an rpg has got to be the story a great story can make the difference between a good or a bad game
10 full on charicter creation would be awesome

My answers:

1. Steampunk
2. Real-Time
3. Yes. It is impotant to me.
4. Yes.
5. I prefer balanced.
6. Another Small Favour.
7. Of course!
8. I don't like the way it is too repetitive.
9. The story.
10. I'd say a sidescrolling rpg. A really good storyline.

1.
Other. Combine them or come up with something of your own, it's not hard. Take like... a futuristic steampunk or something. Make something trippy (which isn't THAT innovative, but still), just try to do something NEW.

2.
Can't say. It depends on how you do it real-time. RPGs should be about playing as a team and that means you have to have good AI for your members of the team, possibly something like the ability to micromanage your characters by pausing the game (think KOTOR or Dragon Age), but that'd still be a lot of work. I'd say play it safe here and put more ffort into the rest.

3.
Yes. A RPG without a story is like a beat 'em up without combos. It's simply lacking one of the most important parts of the game. Story is extremely important in role playing games, if not the most important.

4.
Yes. Assuming there's not too many of them and that you promise to not include any quicktime events.

5.
Not entirely sure what you mean, I'd say that the way you level should be fairly straightforward, i.e. gain experience from killing enemies or make it so that attacking in mêlée gives you mêlée experience, magic gives magic experience etc. However the way that you can pick skills, attributes or whatever you got I'd say having a fairly complex system, although preferably one that is not too hard to understand would definitely help.

6.
Very varying games. I personally prefered Sonny primarily because of the large amount of different skills the variation in enemies and the fact that you actually had a storyline. The harder difficulties however were boring and extremely tedious and just time-consuming, rather that actually challenging.

Epic Battle Fantasy had some sweet features like the way different swords boost different skills and the ability to boost different skills when you reach certain points, but it gets tedious real fast. Especially on the higher difficulties when you have to play so damn defensive it takes hours to get from one checkpoint to another, it's not challenging, just tedious.

Another Small Favour is nice because it got a storyline, it got meaning and it got different ways to solve the problems, although not very sandboxy it's still not - as the other RPGs - just you running along a line.

7.
Yes. RPGs are about Role Playing and having good graphics real adds a lot of the feeling that you are controlling the character.

8.
Not really, no.

9.
The ability to form the game based on your decisions, it adds a lot to the role playing part which is what RPGs are all about.

10.
Story and the ability to shape the story. Play any Bioware game and you should understand.

1. Sci-fi for sure, middle ages are so overused in rpgs
2. Real time, turn based is SO boring
3. A bit, because to me the most important thing about a game is if its fun or not.
4. Yes, cutscenese ado improve the experience
5. A balence of both, simple would be too easy and complex would probably frustrate you.
6. I dont really play rpgs, but sonny is one of the best rpgs i have played
7. Yes, if it really annoying to look at dull and uninteresting graphics
8. I generally dislike turn based rpgs, it gets really annoying and it would be so much more exciting if it was real time.
9. As with all games, I condsider the fun factor to be most important. Isn't that the reason we all play games? For fun?
10. I dont play rpgs a lot so i cant answer this one.

Paper Mario

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?
Graphics are important yes. It'd be SUPER if you did it FBF and not tween based.

well..hmmm battling enemies sometimes when your just going to back maybe to some other place in the world and have to beat 100 batlles in the midst before you can get there....

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
making your own personalization to your file.
10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?

none that I can think of... RPG's are the best!

1.Fanasty
2.Turn based
3.Yes
4.Yes
5.Simple
6.Epic battle fanasty
7.Its a nice add, But doesn't matter that much. As long as it looks good-ish. If its supposed to be 3d but is all pixely I won't like it too well.
8.Not really, I'd have to play a REEEEALY bad on to be mad. Even if it was crappy I might stil like it.
9. How fun it is. Sometime its impossible but you can't stop laughing at your own mistakes and its fun :P
10. Not much RPG's have character create. Some do, But not much. Better one's too.

Sonny

7. Are you more likely to play an RPG Flash game if it has good graphics?
Definitely, I love the pretty!

8. Is there anything you dislike about RPG games in general? Please list.
Though good story is important, the biggest turnoff is long cutscenes/text sequences. Especially when I can't skip all of them at once. On that note, any game where I can't get to the action quickly.

9. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of an RPG game?
Storyline

10. What's missing from Flash RPG's? Is there anything you really want in a free flash RPG that you've never seen before?
Probably anything that has been developed at the same level as commercial rpgs. I think "game depth" is the term I'm looking for.

Cheers

1. Classic and fantasy are always nice, but if a well-made steampunk could be made, then thats it.
2. Real time.
3. YES. I mean, rpg's should always have awesome stories and cool characters. That's one of the main selling points of a good rpg.
4. Yes, the first is very important as it sets the mood. Well-made rpg's have great cutscenes.
5. A balance of both. Leveling should be mostly simple but you can add some flair to add to the experience.
6. Hehe none of them. These flash rpgs dont capture a good rpg feel. You should have the ability to move around and talk to rpgs like final fantasy and such. Those are fun. Exploration like a Zelda game is cool, and stores should be fun to get around.
7. Yes. Art style is very important. I will almost definetly stop playing a rpg if it has basic circles and squares and shit. It needs to have pizazz, with a great art style and good looking colors.
8. A. Originality. I want to see a cool new setting, story, characters, and enemies. No generic games are fun. Also B. The almost constant necessity for a lot of grinding. You should have to grind a little bit, but not so much that it gets boring.
9. Originality, the fun factor. It has to be a fun game with great graphics, original characters, and all of that junk. I need to see a really new fun and original game. I hope what you make is good.
10. What I said in 6.
